4 Different Types of Refrigerators

The average person takes their refrigerator for granted. They just assume there is only one type of refrigerator that you use for cooling and freezing your foods. But there are actually multiple types of refrigerators that each serve a unique purpose. That is why you should learn more about them before deciding on a refrigerator for yourself.

You don’t necessarily need to purchase the standard refrigerator design, which has a smaller freezer on the top and a bigger refrigeration area on the bottom. You’ll find that refrigerators come in many different shapes, sizes, and designs. In fact, some refrigerators include an ice maker and water dispenser as well. These are advanced features found in the more expensive refrigerators.

The one thing they all have in common is the freezer section is small and the refrigeration section is big. Manufacturers design refrigerators this way because more food items need to be refrigerated.

4 Types

Let’s take a look at the 4 different types of refrigerators, so you can learn more about them.

1) Top Freezer Refrigerator

The top freezer refrigerator is a true classic. Like mentioned above, this type of refrigerator has the standard design of a small top freezer and a big lower refrigerator. The appliance stands vertically upright at between 5 and 6 feet tall, so it is higher than it is wide. You can easily open the freezer door or refrigerator door by pulling on its handle.

Top freezer refrigerators are the most affordable types of full-size refrigerators. You can find them sold for between $500 and $1,000. Taller consumers may want to purchase a shorter version of this refrigerator, which is also available too.

2) Side by Side Refrigerator

Some people don’t like the top freezer refrigerator because they have to do more bending to reach items in the lower refrigeration area. The side by side refrigerator fixes this problem because it splits up the freezer and refrigerator on the left and right sides, respectively. Since the freezer and refrigerator are side by side, one is not lower than the other. You can reach each side just as easily.

The refrigeration side on the right is still bigger. However, the width and depth of each section is greatly compromised for the height. In other words, you don’t have as much room in the freezer or refrigerator to fit wider food items because the width of the unit is split between the freezer and refrigerator. The only thing that is increased is the height, but that doesn’t really help because there are shelves in them.

On the upside, side by side refrigerators normally contain a water dispenser and ice maker on the outside. It is built into the freezer door because it needs the freezing temperatures to make the ice. These are features not found in the top freezer refrigerator. So, if you like to make ice for your beverages, then you will love the side by side refrigerator.

3) Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

The bottom freezer refrigerator has the reverse design of the top freezer refrigerator. Instead of the freezer being on the top, it is now on the bottom and the refrigerator is on the top. Since people normally go into the refrigerator more than the freezer, you might want a design where the refrigerator is at eye level. That way, you don’t need to always bend down to get what you want out of the refrigerator.

4) French Door Refrigerator

The French door refrigerator has a very modern and unique design. It keeps the freezer on the bottom, but it splits up the upper area into two halves for the refrigerator. This means you have two different doors and sections for the refrigerator. The purpose is to prevent cool air from escaping by only opening one door at a time. This keeps the cool air contained in the other section of the refrigerator.
