Soldering Iron: Working Principle and Proper Temperature Tips

A soldering iron is used for the purpose of joining two different metal components together as one. It melts a “solder” metal in the middle of the two metal components in order to keep them adjoined in that same position. The solder metal simply has to cool off so that it can harden and cause the two metal components to be permanently connected together.

Think of solder has a metallic glue that starts out as liquid metal and then hardens into solid metal. Soldering is a common practice when dealing with electronic components, engine components, furniture pieces, plumbing / piping, artistic projects, and so on. If it weren’t for soldering, then you wouldn’t have many of the products and components that we take for granted every day. Soldering is a truly useful skill to learn if you want to create or repair your own metal-based items.

The Working Principle and Proper Temperature

The soldering iron is the main tool used in the soldering process. It is the device that produces the necessary heat for melting the solder metal. The heat comes out of an iron tip, so you would put the tip in between the two metal components that you’re trying to connect together. Don’t worry about burning yourself as you hold the soldering iron because it has an insulated handle on it. The handle will protect your hand from getting burned by the intense heat produced by the soldering iron.

Solder is melted between the two components as indicated above. In the beginning, solder is just a thin wire comprised of a tin and copper alloy combination or a tin and lead alloy combination. Most people choose the tin and copper alloy in order to avoid lead in their metals. Lead, as you may know, is a serious safety concern because of scientific evidence that shows it can cause health problems in people. Once the thin solder wire is placed between the two metal components, it is melted onto both of them and then left to cool off and harden.

In order to melt solder metal successfully, the iron tip of the soldering iron has to reach a certain temperature. For most solder metals, their melting point is approximately 188°C (the equivalent of 370°F). However, the iron tip of a soldering iron will get much hotter than that. You can expect the temperature of the iron tip to be anywhere between 330°C and 350°C (the equivalent of 626°F and 662°F). Because of its extreme temperature capabilities, you should set the soldering iron temperature to the lowest one possible on the device. It’ll still be hot enough to melt solder metal, so don’t worry.

The first items you’ll need are safety glasses, a cleaning pad, soldering iron stand, and fume extraction equipment. Eye protection is the most important safety precaution you can take because the heat and fumes from the iron can easily cause eye irritation if your eyes are not protected. The soldering iron stand is a durable stand made to hold a soldering iron and to ensure it is kept in place securely. You can also keep your cleaning pad there too. You use the cleaning pad to clean the iron after it has cooled off.
